Ok, listen: I am not usually sensitive to topics pertaining to my geeky hobbies but something simply disturbed me when someone told me that one of the best movies out there and one of my favorites simply sucks.
It happened during one of the book club sessions and the movie series was often mentioned. The moderator squirms on her seat whenever the movies get mentioned, visibly getting irritated with every mention. Until one day, a few weeks into the session, she just blurts out that the series simply sucks and that the adaptation was incredibly awful that we should not really talk about the movie. She said that the director took too many creative liberties that the integrity of the book itself has diminished.
I sat still when she said all this, but in my head: HOW DARE YOU! But I really did not need to say much, or anything at all, as the other members, in their own ways, defended the movie series. The moderator, however, continued to belittle the series and the director whilst the other members stood to defend the series. And the members passive aggressively defended. It’s like watching a very stubborn game of tug-of-war: everyone at a stalemate.
It was very much amusing to watch.
Will I go back to a book club that she hosts once again? Yeah! Why not? It’s nice to hear different perspectives sometimes, especially of things that are not that much of import. We both love the books but just have different outlooks on the movie series.
And I think that’s fine.
